“When you’re a little kid, you’re a little bit of everything: Artist, Scientist, Athlete, Scholar. Sometimes it seems like growing up is a process of giving those things up, one by one. I guess we all have one thing we regret giving up; one thing we really miss - that we gave up because we were too lazy, or because we couldn’t stick it out, or because we were afraid.” - The Wonder Years

It’s funny how we value success and how we obtain it. Joint Damage played with Fred and Toody Cole a few days ago. It was awesome and for the handful of folks that got hypnotized by there spooky blues, I hope it stuck with them like it did me. The Coles are some of the punkest rebels ever and you could tell being on that stage is what they value more than anything. Success isn’t about fame or money in the end it’s about being yourself as honest as possible and not letting anyone tell you else wise. Who knows what’s best for you than you?

“Straight from the soul, how could they know
We’ll never do what they want us to
People want to know how come we stay the same
But we won’t change - not like that.”

Though I’ve been on a heavy deathrock and thrash kick, there’s still room for this.

But the most important thing that happened to me at that age was meeting the girl who I wanted to be with, and who is still with me to this day, Angie. When we met in 79, I was just 15, she was 14. My hormones were not so much of a distraction because Angie and I went full-time straight away. She wanted me to be who I wanted to be and she wanted to be with me to do that. And she was like, ‘Hey, I like Johnny Thunders and Iggy Pop and the good bits of the Rolling Stones a lot.’ Of course we’re still together! I’m not an idiot.

    5-10-15-20: Johnny Marr | Features | Pitchfork

I talked to Johnny Marr about the music in his life for a Pitchfork 5-10-15-20. One of the most enjoyable interviews I’ve ever done. This guy loves talking about music. This bit, about when he met his wife, I found touching.

    Master Cleanse. Day -1

So 9 months in the city. Ups and downs for sure, but I can’t remember feeling as good, mentally and physically, as I ever have. Hitting the gym 3-4 days a week, and I’m probably the strongest I’ve ever been. In a couple weeks I’d like to start running more often, but time is hard to come by at the moment. Honestly, I’ve also never been as consistently busy as I have since February.

On the mental side, I was actually leaning on the blah side of things, an all too familiar feeling, about 5 weeks ago, but decided to grab some St John’s Wort and maca, and cut-out coffee, and the difference has been incredible! I really feel like I’m operating at a high level, feeling very positive about life and my future (though Rick Santorum makes me want to vomit, did anyone see this????http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egtaV6Pj8yI&feature=related )
In addition to (or as a result of?) just feeling good, I’ve had a ton of musical ideas, have been very creative in general, which has never been a solid characteristic of me. The only problem has been time! On average I’ve played guitar for maybe an hour a WEEK for the last month. My plan over spring break is to hole up, do the master cleanse, work on songs for 4 bands, and make a few summer playlists.

Though I generally enjoy school, not having adequate time for music making is stressing me out, existential wise. There is some hope knowing I only have to take 2 classes in the fall, and should have much more free time.

There is quite a sense of a very real divisiveness coming in my life focus. Of course, there is the spiritually, creatively, and fulfilling romanticism of dedicating as much time to making music as possible, and the side that wants to live to learn in a more traditional academic approach. I’ve been avoiding this type of decision my entire life.

Edit- I wrote the above a week ago.

The rest of today is only liquids, tomorrow I start the cleanse.
I need to get a haircut.
